Summer Survival Guide 101 for expectant and nursing mothers
For our expecting or new mamas in Asia, welcome to the warm embrace of Summer. Whilst we love sunny forecasts unfortunately this also comes with a small challenge: sweating. Here are our top tips on how to handle the heat and remain cool this summer whilst pregnant or breastfeeding.
1. Hydration!
Stay hydrated by drinking an abundant amount of cool, fresh water. This not only will keep your body temperature cool but it’s also extremely essential for your baby’s development. Water helps form the amniotic sac and placenta -therefore when the mother is dehydrated so is the baby. The recommendation for a pregnant women is to drink 8 cups to 12 cups of fluids a day. This equals about 1.9 L to 2.8 L (64 ounces to 96 ounces).
2. Apply sunscreen daily
Applying sunscreen daily is the best way to prevent damage from harmful UV rays. During pregnancy it’s best to avoid of chemical-laden products. Instead opt for mineral based sunscreens which include zinc oxide and titanium dioxide which are considered safe and effective during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
3. Eat your water
There are many ingredients that have high water content and can help meet your daily H20 quota such as: Watermelon, Strawberries, Cucumber, Zucchini, Peacher, Celery, Oranges. These water-rich foods are all healthy for both the mother and growing baby.
4. Portable supply of coolness
When you are out in the heat, protect yourself with your portable supply of coolness which includes wide brimmed hats, mini portable fans and spray bottles can cool you down instantly when your body starts to heat up.
5. Dress the part
Skip the tight skirts and form fitting bodices when the temperature is high. Opt for flowy, breathable fabrics such as cotton as it’s absorbent and light weight.
6. Stay home o’clock
Check the daily forecast in advance so you can plan when to go outdoors. By checking the hourly temperature updates you can avoid peak heat times. If the temperature passes somewhere are 30 degrees celsius, do yourself and your baby a favour by staying indoors with air-conditioning or a fan then relax your feet up on the couch.
7. Try to remain dry
Prickly heat rashes often occur when your skin is both wet and hot. Whether you’re showering and swimming, make sure you completely dry off -especially where the skin rubs against each other such as the thighs or under your breasts.
8. Keep your skin moisturised
