Skin discolouration and darkening during pregnancy
Expecting mothers experience a range of both emotional and physical changes during their pregnancy. Whilst some changes aren’t as obvious, the changes in the belly and skin can be noticeable. Not only the size of the growing belly but many pregnant women experience changes in their skin colour in patches and lines.
What are some signs of discolouration during pregnancy?
Discolouration in skin is extremely common in all three trimesters -it becomes gradual as your pregnancy progresses. Skin discolouration/darkening may be noticeable around the areolas, skin underneath the arms, between the thigh region as well as the linea nigra -aka the line that runs vertically on your belly. Existing freckles and moles may also appear darker due to pregnancy melasma.
How can I help prevent skin discolouration whilst pregnant?
Whilst you can’t prevent hormonal fluctuations in pregnancy that may cause the skin to discolour or darken, there are a couple of cautious steps you can take to protect your skin from UV rays that also affect the skin changes more noticeable.
• Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher on your skin daily.
This not only applies when you go outdoors but even on days you plan to stay indoors. Plenty of the sun's rays come in through windows which can darken the skin. Broad-spectrum formulas, which protect against both UVA and UVB rays, are most effective.
• Keep your skin under wraps.
As well as applying sunscreen, wear a hat that shades your face and the back of your neck, and wear breathable clothing that keeps your skin protected from the sun without overheating.
• Folic Acid. Some experts believe that discolorations are linked to a folic acid deficiency. Make sure you're getting enough through your diet and/or in your prenatal supplement.
• Stay cool. Try to avoid hot baths and showers, and periodically hold a cool, damp washcloth to your face (such as after exercising) or spray your face/body with a cool water spray your face if you feel yourself getting flushed.
Will my skin remain discoloured or darkened postpartum?
Most of the time, the darker skin patches and lines will begin to fade during postpartum but some will remain. Try to switch your mindset as seeing them as beauty marks and a badge of honour for delivering your baby.
